ASICS Run Melbourne Half Marathon Route Map & Elevation Profile

Starting at Batman Avenue, Melbourne and finishing at Inside Melbourne Park. Total elevation gain is not published for this event, and Verus does not estimate one.

Is ASICS Run Melbourne Half Marathon flat?

Nearly. Melbourne is a flat city and the course spends most of itself on the river and the promenades. The one exception is the Tan, which carries the Anderson Street climb, and it arrives late. No official elevation figure is published, so Verus does not state one.

Full ASICS Run Melbourne Half Marathon Route Breakdown

One lap of Melbourne, and the best-designed city half in Australia for anyone who wants to see the place. From Batman Avenue it runs east along Flinders Street, through the canopy of Fitzroy Gardens and past Flinders Street Station, then out to Docklands along the Yarra past Crown and Marvel Stadium at Harbour Esplanade. It crosses the river on the Webb Bridge, follows the South Wharf Promenade and loops back through Alexandra Gardens with the skyline opening up. Then comes the Tan — Melbourne's own running track, on St Kilda Road past the Shrine of Remembrance and around Government House — before the final stretch along the Yarra into Birrarung Marr, over the Tanderrum Bridge and across the line inside Melbourne Park.

Training Strategy for ASICS Run Melbourne Half Marathon

Standard Training Window

10-14 weeks is a solid window for a first half marathon; 8-10 weeks is enough if you're already maintaining a baseline mileage. Build your long run up gradually rather than jumping straight to race distance.

Terrain Specificity

This is a largely flat course, so most of your long runs can mirror that — flat and steady, building time on feet rather than hill strength.

The Taper Phase

Reduce overall mileage across the final 7-10 days while preserving short race-pace bursts. Arrive at Batman Avenue, Melbourne fresh, energized, and primed — not fit, fresh.

Pacing Execution

Lock in your target pace using the interactive splits calculator below — no official pacers are confirmed for this event, so a pace band on your watch is the more reliable option.

Fuel & Hydration Prep

Test your race-day fuel and hydration plan on your long training runs, not for the first time on race day — check the Race Day Checklist below for what's actually on this course.

How many weeks do you actually need to train for a Half Marathon?

Half Marathon Nutrition & Fueling Plan

2-3 Days Prior

A normal diet is fine. There is no need to carb-load for a half marathon.

Race Morning

Eat a carbohydrate-focused breakfast two to three hours before the start, and stick to something you've already tested in training rather than trying anything new. A 6:30am gun makes that an early alarm.

On-Course Fueling

Six drink stations every 2-4km, with PURE Sports Hydration at selected ones. Fluid is usually enough at this distance; the station table is published in advance if you want to plan around it.

Post-Race Recovery

Post-race recovery starts with carbohydrate and protein, ideally within the first hour.

ASICS Run Melbourne Half Marathon Charity Places 2026

Run Melbourne's fundraising hub lets entrants raise for any of hundreds of charities, and offers a run-for-free route for those who commit to a target. It is a fundraising programme rather than a separate entry route.

Impactful Storytelling

Lead with your personal story — explain why the charity matters to you. Personal connection generates 3x more support than a generic link broadcast.

Social Campaign Milestones

Share key training milestones on Instagram (first 10-miler, peak week, race week) with your fundraising link in bio. Publicly thanking donors prompts secondary gifts!

Cons

Fewer places open early.

Southbank

Pros

On the course, close to the start, and well provided for food the night before.

Cons
