Most guides to running somewhere hot treat "hot" as one thing. Saudi Arabia is the clearest possible case for why that's wrong: Riyadh and Jeddah sit roughly 950km apart, share a summer that looks similarly brutal on a thermometer, and are genuinely different sports to run in. One is a dry inland desert where your sweat evaporates the instant it appears. The other is a humid Red Sea coast where it doesn't evaporate at all.
This guide uses Verus's own eleven-year climate archive — hourly Open-Meteo records for both cities, sampled at the hours people actually run rather than averaged across a whole day that includes hours nobody's out in — to show exactly how that difference plays out, month by month.
Why dew point, not temperature, is the number to watch
You don't slow down in the heat because the air is warm. You slow down because you can't shed the heat your muscles are producing, and at running intensity that happens almost entirely by evaporating sweat off your skin. Dew point tells you how much moisture the air is already carrying — and therefore how much room is left for your sweat to evaporate into. Below 10°C, you'll barely notice it. Above 20°C, you'll feel it in the first mile. Above 24°C, evaporative cooling is badly compromised no matter how fit you are.
Air temperature alone hides this. A 30°C morning with a 3°C dew point (Riyadh in July) and a 30°C morning with a 25°C dew point (Jeddah in August) are not comparable runs, even though a weather app shows the same number for both.
What a Saudi morning actually looks like
These are averages across 2015-2025 from the Verus climate archive, at 6am local time — the hour most organised races here actually start.

The index is air temperature plus dew point in Fahrenheit — the standard coaching rule of thumb. Look at what happens in August: Riyadh and Jeddah have almost identical air temperatures at 6am, 29.7°C against 29.6°C. Their indices are 124 and 164. That 40-point gap is entirely the dew point, and it's the difference between a genuinely hard dawn run and one that borders on dangerous.
For comparison
Verus's own Jamaica guide put Kingston's worst month (August, dew point 23.1°C) at an index of 150. Jeddah in August, at 164, is worse than Kingston's worst — a fact that surprises most people who've never run on the Red Sea coast.
Riyadh tells a different story. Its winter mornings are genuinely cool — January averages 9.6°C at 6am, cold enough that the city has a real off-season most desert-climate guides don't expect. But its summer is a different kind of extreme: July highs average 43.4°C, and even at dawn the air is already above 30°C. The near-zero dew point means you won't feel like you're sweating heavily, which is precisely the danger — the fluid loss is happening, you're just not getting the visual cue that usually makes you drink.
The window: why 10am-4pm is a genuine no-go, not a preference
In both cities, outdoor exercise concentrates into a narrow window and everyone treats the midday hours as off-limits rather than merely uncomfortable. Multiple accounts describe 10am-4pm in summer as a hard no for running outdoors — city life visibly shifts to dawn and after-dark, with parks and waterfront paths filling from around 8pm once the sun is down.
The Riyadh Marathon itself starts at 6:25am specifically to beat the heat — worth noting if you assume a January race start implies a mild morning. It doesn't; it implies organisers who know exactly what the alternative looks like.
Dust storms: real, seasonal, not a rare event
Haboobs are a genuine seasonal factor rather than occasional bad luck. Peer-reviewed analysis of 27 Saudi meteorological stations (2000-2016) puts confirmed dust-storm days at roughly 45-48 a year nationally — call it an eighth of the year — with dust-haze days that fall short of a full storm running well above that at many stations, reportedly over 60% of the year at some desert sites; treat the higher figure as a less rigorously sourced estimate than the storm-day count. Riyadh and the northern/central interior see their peak in spring (March-May), driven by strong northwesterly "shamal" winds; the Red Sea coastal south, including Jeddah, tends to see more of its dust activity in winter (December-February) instead.
One runner's account of the Riyadh Marathon described dust thick enough to hamper visibility mid-race, and the dry air itself leaving "throat and mouth like scouring pads" — worth knowing before you assume a desert race means clear skies. That said, Saudi state media has also reported a notable recent decline in dust storm frequency (a claimed 53% drop, and a 20-year low around 2024), so treat this as genuinely variable year to year rather than a fixed hazard.
Riyadh's hidden risk: not feeling like you're sweating
The most repeated piece of practical advice from people who actually run in Riyadh is this: the dry heat doesn't announce itself the way humid heat does. You don't feel drenched, so it's easy to under-drink. The failure mode that actually catches people out isn't the obvious one — it's a sudden bad headache partway through a run, the first real sign that dehydration has already set in.
- Drink on a schedule, not by how sweaty you feel, especially in Riyadh.
- In Jeddah, the opposite risk applies — heavy, visible sweating with a real electrolyte cost, closer to the Kingston pattern of drinking plain water without replacing salt.
- Both cities: start hydrated, not merely not-thirsty. Thirst lags well behind need in either climate.
- Indoor mall-walking is a genuine, normal fallback during the worst weeks — not a compromise, just what a lot of residents actually do.
Acclimatising works here the same way it works everywhere
Heat acclimatisation is one of the best-established adaptations in endurance sport — ten to fourteen days of heat exposure expands plasma volume, brings sweating on earlier and more freely, and lowers heart rate at a given effort. The practical difference between the two cities is what you're acclimatising to: Riyadh needs you to trust a hydration schedule over how you feel; Jeddah needs you to accept that evaporative cooling simply won't fully work, no matter how fit you get.
- 1 If you can arrive early, do — a fortnight of local heat exposure pays for itself completely.
- 2 If you can't, train hot at home in the weeks before: overdress deliberately, run in the day's warmest window, and accept slower paces in exchange for a genuinely better first week on the ground.
- 3 Expect your first three or four dawn runs to feel disproportionately hard regardless of your home fitness — that is normal, not a signal to push harder.
When it stops being about pace
Everything above is about running slower and more carefully. Exertional heat illness is a different thing entirely — it develops faster than people expect and is a medical emergency, not a pacing problem.
Stop and get help if
You get chills or goosebumps despite the heat, you stop sweating, you become confused, disoriented or unusually irritable, you develop a headache with nausea, or your coordination goes. None of those are things to push through. Get into shade or air conditioning, get cool, and get help.
