Running in St James: Montego Bay, and the Island’s Second Racing Centre

Quick Answer

St James is the only parish outside the capital with a real race calendar: the Team Sangster 10K and 5K in September, run by the operator of Sangster International Airport and starting at 06:00, the Jill Stewart MoBay City Run 10K in May and the MoBay Night Run 5K in April. Running in Montego Bay means the flat coastal strip early, or the hills that rise steeply straight behind the town.

Montego Bay is Jamaica's second city and its main tourist gateway, and for a runner it is the only place outside the Kingston conurbation with a genuine racing calendar of its own. Three events on the Verus calendar are staged here, including one that starts at six in the morning — the earliest gun time in the country.

A flat shelf with hills straight behind it

A narrow flat coastal shelf with hills rising immediately behind it. The city runs along the bay; go inland even a short distance and you are climbing steeply into residential hills and, beyond them, the interior towards Cockpit Country. There is no gentle transition — the flat ends and the climb starts.

That gives a runner based here a clean choice on any given morning: flat and coastal, or hard and hilly. What it does not give is much in between.

Where to run in Montego Bay

  • The coastal strip through the tourist area — Gloucester Avenue and the seafront — is flat, lit and busy, which makes it the natural early-morning option and an unpleasant one later in the day.
  • The Bogue and Freeport peninsula area gives flatter, quieter road running away from the main strip, and is the usual choice for anyone wanting distance without traffic.
  • The A1 east through Ironshore and Rose Hall towards the Trelawny boundary is flat and fast, with hotel frontage on one side and traffic on the other — an early-only proposition.
  • The Catherine Hall sports complex area gives you the town’s athletics facilities, which is where track work happens.
  • Inland, the residential hills behind the town are the parish’s hill sessions, and they are steep enough that you will not need to look for a gradient.

The tourist-strip problem

Gloucester Avenue is the obvious place to run and the obvious place not to run, depending entirely on the hour. Before about 07:00 it is quiet, flat and pleasant. From mid-morning it is a busy tourist thoroughfare with pedestrians, taxis and vendors. The heat advice and the traffic advice point the same way here, which makes the decision easy.

The races

St James punches well above its weight on the calendar, and the events have real local identity rather than being generic charity 5Ks.

RaceWhenNotes
Team Sangster 10K and 5KSeptemberRun by MBJ Airports, the operator of Sangster International Airport. A 06:00 start — the earliest on the Jamaican calendar, and September is the hardest month of the year, so the two facts are related.
MoBay Night Run 5KAprilAn evening race, which is the other way to solve the heat problem.
Jill Stewart MoBay City Run 10KMayThe main road race on the Montego Bay side of the island.

Entry for the Montego Bay events generally runs through Running Events Jamaica, which handles a large share of the island's road racing. Race-pack collection is normally in the days beforehand rather than on the morning.

A September 10K at 06:00 is not a cool-weather 10K. Convert your target into a range first.

North-coast trade wind

The north coast catches more of the trade wind breeze than the southern plains do, which helps on the exposed coastal sections. It is not cooler in any meaningful sense — the dew point governs, and it is tropical throughout — but moving air over wet skin is worth having.

This site's eleven-year climate archive is anchored on Kingston, not Montego Bay, so the figures quoted elsewhere are capital numbers rather than local ones. The shape holds regardless — a dawn conditions index of 139 to 150 across the year, climbing six to seven points by 08:00 — but treat them as indicative here rather than a Montego Bay-specific record.

For a visiting runner

This is the easiest parish in Jamaica to arrive in and run in. Sangster International Airport is roughly ten minutes from central Montego Bay, accommodation is concentrated along a flat coastal strip, and the running is immediately outside the door rather than a drive away.

  • Run at first light along the coast, and use the hills behind town when you want a session.
  • Resort properties often have grounds and paths that are useful for easy days and shakeouts.
  • Time a trip around one of the three races if you can — a local field is by far the fastest way into the running community here.
  • Carry fluid. The coastal strip is exposed and shops are not reliably open at 05:30.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can you run in Montego Bay?

The coastal strip along Gloucester Avenue and the seafront early in the morning, before the tourist traffic; the Bogue and Freeport peninsula for quieter flat distance; the A1 east through Ironshore and Rose Hall for flat, fast running at dawn; and the residential hills straight behind the town for hill sessions, which start climbing immediately.

What races are held in Montego Bay?

Three on the Verus calendar: the Team Sangster 10K and 5K in September, run by the operator of Sangster International Airport and starting at 06:00 — the earliest gun time in Jamaica; the MoBay Night Run 5K in April; and the Jill Stewart MoBay City Run 10K in May, the main road race on that side of the island.

Why does the Team Sangster 10K start at 06:00?

Because September is the hardest month of the year to run in Jamaica. Kingston's dawn conditions index sits at 150 in September and reaches 161 by 10:00, and 78% of September mornings start at or above 24°C. A 06:00 gun is the organiser doing the arithmetic rather than a stylistic choice.

Is Montego Bay good for running as a visitor?

It is the easiest parish in Jamaica to arrive in and run in. The airport is roughly ten minutes from the centre, accommodation is concentrated along a flat coastal strip, and the running is immediately outside the door. It also has the only real race calendar outside the Kingston conurbation.
