The Canberra Times Marathon Route Map & Elevation Profile

Starting at King George Terrace, Parkes — event village at John Dunmore Lang Place and finishing at King Edward Terrace, by Old Parliament House. Total elevation gain is not published for this event, and Verus does not estimate one.

Is The Canberra Times Marathon flat?

Mostly, with one real exception. Canberra is a lake-and-parkland course on wide closed roads, and the half marathon over much of the same ground publishes 215m of total elevation across 21.1km with a 44m difference between the low and high points — gently undulating rather than hilly. What the marathon adds is Anzac Parade, a long steady pull towards the War Memorial. No official elevation figure is published for the full marathon, so Verus doesn't state one.

Full The Canberra Times Marathon Route Breakdown

The oldest city marathon in Australia, and a tour of the things Canberra was built to display. It starts on King George Terrace outside Old Parliament House with a loop around Parliament House, then runs through Telopea Park, down Kings Avenue and onto the open roads of Parkes Way. The climb up Anzac Parade towards the Australian War Memorial is the moment everyone remembers — a long, straight, ceremonial avenue with the memorial at the top of it. From there the course returns through Barton, follows State Circle and Adelaide Avenue into Weston Park, and takes Alexandrina Drive along the shore of Lake Burley Griffin before turning back towards the city. The last kilometres run State Circle, Brisbane Avenue and King Edward Terrace to the finish.

  • Shuttle bus booked in advance if you want it — registration closes on 23 March, weeks before race day

  • A meeting point agreed at the event village at John Dunmore Lang Place

Training Strategy for The Canberra Times Marathon

Standard Training Window

16-20 weeks is the target window for first-time marathoners; 12-16 weeks is solid if you're already maintaining a baseline mileage. Arrive with your longest run behind you in training, not on race day itself.

Terrain Specificity

This is a largely flat course, so most of your long runs can mirror that — flat and steady, building time on feet rather than hill strength.

The Taper Phase

Reduce overall mileage across the final 2-3 weeks while preserving short race-pace bursts. Arrive at King George Terrace, Parkes — event village at John Dunmore Lang Place fresh, energized, and primed — not fit, fresh.

Pacing Execution

Lock in your target pace using the interactive splits calculator below — no official pacers are confirmed for this event, so a pace band on your watch is the more reliable option.

Fuel & Hydration Prep

Test your race-day fuel and hydration plan on your long training runs, not for the first time on race day — check the Race Day Checklist below for what's actually on this course.

Marathon Nutrition & Fueling Plan

2-3 Days Prior

A deliberate increase in carbohydrate over the two to three days before the race is the conventional approach at marathon distance.

Race Morning

A 6:15am start makes the usual three-hour gap impractical. Either eat small and early or rehearse a compressed version on a long run beforehand.

On-Course Fueling

Drink stations sit roughly every 2.5-4km, carrying water, FIXX electrolyte and GU gels — an unusually generous provision, and worth training on if you plan to use it. A personal refreshment drop-off is available for marathon runners.

Post-Race Recovery

An hour or so is the rough window for carbohydrate and protein to do the most for recovery.

The Canberra Times Marathon Charity Places 2027

No formal charity-place scheme published — runners commonly fundraise for a charity of their own choosing.

Impactful Storytelling

Lead with your personal story — explain why the charity matters to you. Personal connection generates 3x more support than a generic link broadcast.

Social Campaign Milestones

Share key training milestones on Instagram (first 10-miler, peak week, race week) with your fundraising link in bio. Publicly thanking donors prompts secondary gifts!

Where to Stay for The Canberra Times Marathon

Barton and Kingston

Pros

Inside the Parliamentary Triangle, walking distance to the start, the finish and the event village. Good restaurants in Kingston for the night before.

Cons

Small area, and it fills for race weekend.

Canberra city centre and Braddon

Pros

The widest choice of places to stay and eat, and the shuttle bus leaves from Braddon. Light rail on the doorstep.

Cons

A 25-minute walk to the start, or the shuttle, which has to be booked weeks ahead.

Travel & Logistics

By Train

Canberra has no metropolitan train network. The light rail runs from Gungahlin through Braddon into the city, which is why the event shuttle starts from Braddon.

Park & Ride Shuttles

A shuttle bus operates on the Sunday between Braddon and Commonwealth Avenue for marathon and half marathon runners, A$15 each way, booked through registration by 23 March. The Commonwealth Avenue drop-off is a 700m walk from the event village, and there are no stops in between.

Road closures

Extensive closures across the Parliamentary Triangle, Parkes Way, Anzac Parade, State Circle and Adelaide Avenue. Parking near the event village and start line is limited, which is the reason the shuttle exists.

Spectator & Cheer Guide

Cheer Zones & Hotspots

Anzac Parade for the climb towards the War Memorial, the Lake Burley Griffin shore on Alexandrina Drive, and King Edward Terrace for the finish.

Course Navigation

The Parliamentary Triangle is compact and walkable, so a spectator can see the start, catch runners on Kings Avenue and still reach the finish on foot.

Live App Tracking

The festival runs its own event app, carrying the timetable, results and tracking.
