Marathons

26.2 miles. It is the distance almost everyone means when they say they are training for something, and the only mass-participation event where the difference between finishing comfortably and not finishing at all is decided months before race day.

The races below run from closed-road city marathons with six-figure ballot entries down to rural events with a few hundred runners and a village hall at the finish. They are the same distance and they are not the same day: field size, road closures, crowd support and course profile change a marathon far more than most people expect before their first one.

So each race page here carries the facts that actually decide the day — the official elevation figure where one exists, the cut-off, the entry route, and what the organiser really publishes about the course — rather than a repeated paragraph about how special 26.2 miles is.

Verus lists 207 marathons across 5 countries, 189 of them still to come. Race guides are researched by hand from the organiser's own material; directory listings link straight out to the organiser. Either way, every page says plainly where a fact hasn't been published rather than inventing one.

By difficulty

The toughest and the flattest

Ranked by climb per mile rather than total ascent, which is the comparison that survives across distances. Computed from 6 marathons where the organiser publishes an official elevation figure — races without one are left out rather than estimated.

All 207 marathons, by country

Listed chronologically within each country. Every race has its own page covering entry, route, elevation, cut-offs where published, a pace calculator, and the Verus athletes running it.

A calendar that runs upside down — marathons in winter, ultras in the shoulder seasons, and a summer most people race around rather than through. The largest parkrun scene outside Britain, a triathlon culture that produced most of the sport, and distances between start lines measured in flights.

A small calendar with one internationally known race at the centre of it, run in heat that changes how every distance feels.

A running scene still being built in real time — Vision 2030 money, a five-year-old flagship marathon, and now T100's first-ever Saudi race, in Jeddah.

Verus covers 18 countries so far, and there are 13 with racing on the site but no marathon in it yet — Canada, Singapore, Qatar, Spain, UAE, France, United States, Uzbekistan, Japan, Italy, Germany, China, New Zealand. Nothing is listed for them at this distance rather than padding the page out with events we haven't researched. Know one we're missing?

The guide

Choosing and training for marathons

The four ways into a marathon

**Ballot.** Only the very largest marathons use one, and it is a lottery held six to nine months ahead with odds that can run past twenty to one. It is worth entering because it costs little, and worth never relying on.

**General entry.** The great majority of British marathons are simply first come, first served — Brighton, Manchester, Chester, Milton Keynes, Yorkshire and almost every rural marathon in the calendar. The constraint is not luck, it is remembering to enter before the price tier rises or the race sells out, which for the bigger ones can be eleven months ahead.

**Charity place.** The most misunderstood route. A charity place typically costs less up front in exchange for a minimum fundraising commitment, and there is no universal figure — each charity sets its own entry fee and its own target. Alzheimer's Society asked £20 and £550 for Brighton, for instance; another charity at the same race will ask something else entirely. Contact the charity directly and agree the terms before you commit, because the fundraising minimum is a real obligation.

**Good For Age or club entry.** Some larger events hold places for runners who have hit a qualifying time, and some for affiliated club runners. Where a race operates one, its page says so.

How flat is flat, really?

Marathons are marketed as flat considerably more often than they are flat. As a rough scale: under about 400ft of total ascent across 26.2 miles is genuinely flat; 400 to 700ft is what most "fast" British road marathons actually are; and past about 1,000ft you are looking at a course that will cost you real minutes.

Total ascent is only half the story, though. Where the climbing sits matters as much as how much of it there is. Brighton is a good worked example: 477ft in total, which sounds gentle, but almost all of it is front-loaded — a climb out of Preston Park in the first kilometre and a long gradual drag out to the Ovingdean turnaround between miles 7 and 13 — leaving the Hove seafront closing miles genuinely flat. That is a fast course. The same 477ft arranged as a hill at mile 22 would not be.

Verus states the official elevation figure where the organiser or a credible independent source publishes one, and says plainly that none exists where none does, rather than estimating. Every marathon page answers the flatness question directly in prose, because it is the single most-searched thing about any marathon course.

The training block

16 to 20 weeks is the standard window for a first marathon. 12 to 16 works if you are already holding a consistent weekly mileage rather than building one from scratch. Below 12 weeks you are not training for a marathon, you are hoping.

The long run is the backbone, and the point of it is to arrive with your longest run behind you in training rather than discovering it on race day. Most plans top out somewhere between 18 and 22 miles; running the full 26.2 in training costs more in recovery than it returns in confidence.

Two things matter more than people expect. The first is running some of your long runs at goal race pace rather than all of them slowly, because holding a pace is a separate skill from covering a distance. The second is terrain specificity: if the course has real climbs, some midweek hill repeats will do more for you than another flat mile. Every marathon page on Verus works out its own training guidance from the race's actual keyClimbs data rather than reusing one generic block.

The taper, and carbohydrate loading

The taper runs across the final two to three weeks: overall mileage drops substantially while some short race-pace efforts are preserved so you stay sharp rather than merely rested. Arriving fresh beats arriving fitter, and the fitness you would gain in those last three weeks is smaller than the fatigue you would carry in with it.

Carbohydrate loading is more modest than folklore suggests. The evidence-backed approach is a moderate increase in carbohydrate intake across the two or three days before, not one enormous pasta dinner the night before — which mostly produces a bad night's sleep and a heavy stomach. Keep fibre low in the final 24 hours.

On race morning, eat a carbohydrate-focused breakfast two to three hours before the start, and eat something you have already tested on a long run rather than whatever the hotel is serving.

Cut-offs, pacers and being a slower runner

Most British road marathons run a cut-off between six and seven hours, and it is published — Brighton's is seven hours from the start. That figure is worth checking before you enter rather than after, because a six-hour cut-off and a seven-hour cut-off are meaningfully different races for a first-time marathoner.

Official pacers are the other thing to check. A race with pacer bands from 3:00 to 7:00 is telling you it expects and supports the whole spread of the field; a race with bands stopping at 4:30 is telling you something else. Each race page lists the official pacer bands where the organiser publishes them, and says so where none are confirmed.

If there are no pacers at your target, a pace band on your watch does the same job more reliably. Every marathon page here carries a splits calculator that will build one for your goal time.

Choosing your first marathon

For a first marathon, three things are worth weighting heavily. A spring or autumn date, so the training block does not fall entirely in the dark or the heat. A field large enough that there are people around you at your pace for 26 miles — running the back half of a small rural marathon alone is a much harder mental day than the finish-line photos suggest. And a course profile you have actually looked at rather than one described as flat in the marketing copy.

Logistics matter more than they seem to. A race with a start and finish in the same place, or a short walk apart, removes a genuine problem on legs that have just done 26.2 miles — as does knowing in advance where you are meeting people afterwards. Every race page here covers transport, road closures, spectator points and where to stay for exactly that reason.

Questions

Marathons: common questions

How long is a marathon?

26.2 miles, or 42.195km. The distance has been standardised since 1921.

How long should you train for a marathon?

16 to 20 weeks for a first marathon, or 12 to 16 weeks if you are already maintaining a consistent weekly mileage. The aim is to complete your longest training run before race day rather than on it — most plans peak somewhere between 18 and 22 miles.

Do all marathons have a ballot?

No — only the very largest. The great majority of British marathons are first come, first served and sell out on demand rather than by lottery. For those, the constraint is entering early enough, not luck.

How do charity places for marathons work?

A charity place usually costs less up front in exchange for a minimum fundraising commitment. There is no universal minimum — each charity sets its own entry fee and target, and two charities at the same race will often ask for very different amounts. Agree the terms with the charity directly before committing, because the fundraising minimum is a real obligation.

What is a flat marathon?

As a working scale: under about 400ft of total ascent across 26.2 miles is genuinely flat, 400 to 700ft covers most "fast" British road marathons, and past roughly 1,000ft you are on a course that will cost real minutes. Where the climbing sits matters as much as the total — front-loaded ascent with flat closing miles is much faster than the same figure arranged as a hill at mile 22.

What is the cut-off time for a marathon?

Most British road marathons publish a cut-off between six and seven hours. It is worth checking before you enter rather than after — six hours and seven hours are meaningfully different races for a first-time marathoner. Every race page here lists the figure where the organiser publishes one.

How much does it cost to enter a marathon?

British marathon entry generally runs from around £40 for a small club event to £80 or more for a large closed-road city race, with prices rising through tiers as places sell. Each race page lists the price the organiser published and the date it was checked, since these are snapshots rather than guarantees.

Should you carb load before a marathon?

Yes, but far more modestly than folklore suggests. The evidence-backed approach is a moderate increase in carbohydrate intake across the two or three days before, with fibre kept low in the last 24 hours — not one enormous meal the night before, which mostly costs you sleep.

How long does it take to recover from a marathon?

Plan on two to three weeks of very easy running before any real training resumes, and longer if the course was hilly. The old rule of one easy day per mile raced is crude but not far wrong.

What is a good marathon time?

There is no single answer, which is why Verus puts a pace calculator and a finish-time estimator on every race page rather than publishing a target. For most of the field the goal is finishing, and British marathon cut-offs are set with exactly that in mind.
