Direct Entry Summary
A$235 for Australian residents and A$295 for international entrants, including bib, finisher medal, Nike finisher tee and e-certificate. General allocation for the marathon and half has been exhausted for 2026 and entry to both is by ballot.
Ballot Policy
Entry to the marathon and the half marathon is by ballot once the general allocation is exhausted, which it has been for 2026. Separately, a time-qualified entry route exists for runners who have run inside the standard on an AIMS-certified course between 1 January 2025 and 1 September 2026 — sub-2:45 under 39, sub-2:55 for 40-49, sub-3:05 for 50-59, and sub-4:15 for 70 and over. Meeting the standard does not guarantee a place; if applications exceed the allocation, the fastest in each age and gender category get in.
Nike Melbourne Marathon Race Day Weather
A real forecast appears here once one exists for race day — usually about a week to ten days out. Nothing is shown until then, because a made-up forecast is worse than none.
Nike Melbourne Marathon Route Map & Elevation Profile
Starting at Batman Avenue, 150m north of Rod Laver Arena and finishing at Melbourne Cricket Ground — a lap of the turf to the finish line. Total elevation gain is not published for this event, and Verus does not estimate one.
Is Nike Melbourne Marathon flat?
Yes, and more so than it used to be. Melbourne has always been a flat marathon by Australian standards — the bay section is genuinely level — but the old course had a sting at 36km, a climb up Birdwood Avenue to Domain Road that arrived at the worst point. That climb was removed for 2026, and the organiser puts the resulting reduction in total elevation gain at up to 20%. The new elevation profiles had not been published at the time of checking, so Verus does not state a figure. What can be said is that the course is now flatter than the one every existing Melbourne PB was set on.

Where Nike Melbourne Marathon starts and finishes
These are the start and finish points, not the route. Verus doesn't hold course files for this race, and drawing a line between two pins would be a guess you might end up training on. The official course map is the one to use: view it on the organiser's site .
Full Nike Melbourne Marathon Route Breakdown
The best-known marathon course in Australia, and in 2026 a deliberately faster one. It starts on Batman Avenue beside Rod Laver Arena, runs out past Albert Park Lake, along St Kilda Road and down onto the bay through St Kilda and Brighton, then comes back up Beaconsfield Parade towards the city and finishes with a lap of the MCG turf. For 2026 the organiser reworked it: the 36km Birdwood Avenue to Domain Road climb has been removed, cutting elevation gain by up to 20%; the Beach Road section now runs in the reverse direction; there are fewer turns and more road width; and the old Southbank Boulevard diversion — a false finish that had runners think they were nearly home when they were not — is gone, so the approach to the MCG is continuous.

- Race number attached, and any timing chip fitted per your race pack instructions
- A plan to reach Batman Avenue for a 6:15am start — the trams do not run that early
- Something warm and disposable for the wait; a Melbourne October dawn averages around 10°C
- Your own gels if you use them, planned around the eight aid stations rather than assuming their contents
- A meeting point agreed outside the MCG — the finish is inside the ground and spectator access is managed
- A change of clothes; Melbourne in October can hand you all four seasons inside one marathon
Training Strategy for Nike Melbourne Marathon
16-20 weeks is the target window for first-time marathoners; 12-16 weeks is solid if you're already maintaining a baseline mileage. Arrive with your longest run behind you in training, not on race day itself.
This is a largely flat course, so most of your long runs can mirror that — flat and steady, building time on feet rather than hill strength.
Reduce overall mileage across the final 2-3 weeks while preserving short race-pace bursts. Arrive at Batman Avenue, 150m north of Rod Laver Arena fresh, energized, and primed — not fit, fresh.
Lock in your target pace using the interactive splits calculator below, or stay attached to one of the official pacing flags (2:50, 3:00, 3:10, 3:20, 3:30).
Test your race-day fuel and hydration plan on your long training runs, not for the first time on race day — check the Race Day Checklist below for what's actually on this course.
Marathon Nutrition & Fueling Plan
A deliberate increase in carbohydrate over the two to three days before the race is the standard approach at marathon distance.
A 6:15am start makes the usual three-hour gap impractical for most people. Either eat small and early or rehearse a compressed version on a long run beforehand — do not improvise it on the day.
Most runners take on carbohydrate every 30 to 45 minutes from about an hour in, alongside fluid at the eight on-course stations.
The first hour after finishing is when carbohydrate and protein do the most for recovery.
Nike Melbourne Marathon Charity Places 2026
Five platinum charity partners plus a wider gold tier run places at the festival, with fundraising handled through the event’s own platform. Terms are set by each charity rather than by the event.
Lead with your personal story — explain why the charity matters to you. Personal connection generates 3x more support than a generic link broadcast.

Melbourne CBD and Southbank
Walking distance to the Batman Avenue start and the MCG finish. Everything about the morning is simpler.
Priced accordingly, and a city-centre Saturday night is not a quiet one before a 6:15am alarm.
St Kilda
On the course, close to the bay section, and a short tram ride into the city. Good coffee for a race morning.
You still need to be at Batman Avenue before 6:15am, and the trams are not running yet.
Richmond and East Melbourne
Next to the MCG, quiet, and an easy walk to the start along the river.
Fewer places open early, and less to do the day before.
Travel & Logistics
Flinders Street and Richmond stations both sit within walking distance of Batman Avenue and the MCG. Jolimont station is closest to the finish.
Extensive closures through the city, St Kilda Road, the bay foreshore and Beach Road. The festival publishes a dedicated road closures page ahead of race weekend.
Spectator & Cheer Guide
The bay foreshore through St Kilda and Brighton is the easiest stretch to reach and the most pleasant place to wait. The MCG finish is the one people remember — runners come off the road and onto the turf.
The course runs out and back along the bay, so a spectator standing anywhere on Beaconsfield Parade sees their runner twice, then has a straightforward tram or train ride back to the MCG for the finish.
