TCS Sydney Marathon 2026: quick answers

When is TCS Sydney Marathon 2026?

TCS Sydney Marathon 2026 takes place on Sunday, 30 August 2026, starting at 6:30am for the mass field, with elite wheelchair athletes away at 6:15am.

What time does TCS Sydney Marathon start?

TCS Sydney Marathon starts at 6:30am for the mass field, with elite wheelchair athletes away at 6:15am from Miller Street, North Sydney — assembly in St Leonards Park.

Where does TCS Sydney Marathon start and finish?

TCS Sydney Marathon starts at Miller Street, North Sydney — assembly in St Leonards Park and finishes at Sydney Opera House forecourt.

How many miles is TCS Sydney Marathon?

TCS Sydney Marathon is 26.2 miles (42.2km).

How much elevation gain does TCS Sydney Marathon have?

TCS Sydney Marathon has approximately 1027ft of total elevation gain. No. Sydney is a scenic marathon rather than a fast one, and the organiser's own figure — 313m (1,027ft) of climbing — puts it well above Berlin, Chicago or the Gold Coast. What flatters the number slightly is that the course drops 83m net from North Sydney to the harbour, so the elevation is real climbing rather than rolling terrain that gives itself back. The sting is where it sits: the Oxford Street climb lands between 35km and 40km, which is the worst possible place for five kilometres of uphill. Plan the first half around the fact that the hardest climbing is still ahead of you at 35km, not behind you.

How much does TCS Sydney Marathon cost to enter?

There is no way to simply buy a place. Entry comes through the general ballot, a charity place, or an official travel partner package. The ballot is free to enter and you are only charged if you are drawn — which in 2026 meant 123,000 applications for the field.

How can I track a runner at TCS Sydney Marathon?

Live tracking runs through the official TCS Sydney Marathon app, and the race is broadcast live and free nationwide on SBS and SBS On Demand from 6:00am AEST.

Direct Entry Summary

There is no way to simply buy a place. Entry comes through the general ballot, a charity place, or an official travel partner package. The ballot is free to enter and you are only charged if you are drawn — which in 2026 meant 123,000 applications for the field.

Ballot Policy

The general ballot for 2027 opens in September 2026, with the exact date announced on 30 August 2026. Registering costs nothing and your card is only charged if you're selected. With 123,000 applications for the 2026 race, it is heavily oversubscribed — treat the ballot as the least likely of the three routes rather than the default one.

Full TCS Sydney Marathon Route Breakdown

Point to point, north shore to Opera House. The field assembles in St Leonards Park and starts on Miller Street in North Sydney, then crosses the Sydney Harbour Bridge inside the first three kilometres — the single reason many people enter, and worth not sprinting. From the bridge the route drops into The Rocks and Circular Quay, works through the CBD and out to Pyrmont, then heads east for an out-and-back along Anzac Parade and a loop of Centennial Park. The race is decided on the way home: the Oxford Street climb between roughly 35km and 40km is where a well-paced first half either holds or does not, and it comes after the point at which most people have stopped making good decisions. The last kilometre runs down through the Royal Botanic Garden to a finish on the Opera House forecourt.

TCS Sydney Marathon Race Day Checklist

Tap items to mark off your race-day readiness.

0/7
  • Race bib collected at the Running Show during race week — there is no collection on race morning
  • Wave colour and assembly chute letter checked off your bib the night before, not in the dark at St Leonards Park
  • A plan to reach North Sydney for a 6:30am start, with the bridge and much of the CBD closed to traffic
  • Something warm and disposable for the wait — a Sydney August dawn averages around 9°C, and the assembly areas are exposed
  • Your own gels if you use them, tested in training rather than trialled on the Oxford Street climb
  • The official app downloaded, for tracking and last-minute changes
  • A meeting point agreed near Circular Quay rather than the Opera House forecourt itself, which is fenced and very busy

Training Strategy for TCS Sydney Marathon

Standard Training Window

16-20 weeks is the target window for first-time marathoners; 12-16 weeks is solid if you're already maintaining a baseline mileage. Arrive with your longest run behind you in training, not on race day itself.

Terrain Specificity

This course has real climbs — sydney harbour bridge around mile 1.5, oxford street around mile 22.5 — so include some hill-repeat sessions midweek rather than relying only on flat long runs.

The Taper Phase

Reduce overall mileage across the final 2-3 weeks while preserving short race-pace bursts. Arrive at Miller Street, North Sydney — assembly in St Leonards Park fresh, energized, and primed — not fit, fresh.

Pacing Execution

Lock in your target pace using the interactive splits calculator below, or stay attached to one of the official pacing flags (2:30, 3:00, 3:30, 3:35, 3:55).

Fuel & Hydration Prep

Test your race-day fuel and hydration plan on your long training runs, not for the first time on race day — check the Race Day Checklist below for what's actually on this course.

How many weeks do you actually need to train for a Marathon?

Marathon Nutrition & Fueling Plan

2-3 Days Prior

A deliberate increase in carbohydrate over the two to three days before the race is the well-established approach at marathon distance.

Race Morning

A 6:30am start means eating at around 4:00am for the usual three-hour gap, or accepting a smaller breakfast closer to the gun. Whichever you choose, rehearse it on a long run first — this is the single most common thing people get wrong when travelling to Sydney from a later-starting race calendar.

On-Course Fueling

Most runners take on carbohydrate every 30 to 45 minutes from about an hour in, alongside fluid at the on-course stations. Plan the last feed before the Oxford Street climb rather than during it.

Post-Race Recovery

A mix of carbohydrate and protein in the hour or so after finishing supports recovery.

TCS Sydney Marathon Charity Places 2026

A charity place is a guaranteed entry and bypasses the ballot entirely. You apply directly to a charity rather than to the race: each of the 50-plus official partners selects its own runners and sets its own fundraising commitment, so the terms differ from one to the next. Applications generally open after the ballot results are announced, which is the point at which most of the field finds out it needs another route. Fundraising runs through Grassrootz.

Impactful Storytelling

Lead with your personal story — explain why the charity matters to you. Personal connection generates 3x more support than a generic link broadcast.

Social Campaign Milestones

Share key training milestones on Instagram (first 10-miler, peak week, race week) with your fundraising link in bio. Publicly thanking donors prompts secondary gifts!

Where to Stay for TCS Sydney Marathon

Circular Quay and The Rocks

Pros

Walking distance to the finish, and close enough to reach the North Sydney start on foot over the bridge or one stop on the train.

Cons

The most expensive part of the city, and marathon weekend is not when it discounts.

North Sydney and Milsons Point

Pros

You can walk to the start, which on a 6:30am start line in August is worth real money. Quieter than the CBD.

Cons

You finish on the other side of the harbour and have to get back over it afterwards, on legs that have just run a marathon.

Surry Hills and Darlinghurst

Pros

Close to the Oxford Street section, well served for food afterwards, and a shorter walk to the finish than it looks on a map.

Cons

Getting to the North Sydney start means an early train, and the area is lively late on a Saturday night.

Travel & Logistics

By Train

North Sydney and Milsons Point stations both sit within a short walk of the assembly areas, and Circular Quay is a few minutes from the finish. Trains run early on race morning; the Harbour Bridge is closed to traffic, so public transport is not the convenient option but the only sensible one.

Park & Ride Shuttles

No park and ride scheme. Driving to the start is impractical with the bridge and the CBD closed — the organiser directs everyone to public transport.

Road closures

Extensive closures across North Sydney, the Harbour Bridge, the CBD, the Eastern Suburbs and the harbour foreshore. The official Smart Map, built into the TRACX app, carries live road-closure and transport information across race weekend.

Spectator & Cheer Guide

Cheer Zones & Hotspots

Seven official Party Zones with DJs, dance crews and roving bands, plus the Motion festival at Customs House across the marathon weekend. The Launchpad zone at the 10km mark, by Barangaroo metro station on Hickson Road, is the easiest one to reach early.

Course Navigation

The course loops back on itself through the CBD and the Eastern Suburbs, so a spectator based near Circular Quay or Hyde Park can see a runner more than once and still reach the finish. Metro and train are the only reliable way to move between zones with the roads closed.

Live App Tracking

Live tracking runs through the official TCS Sydney Marathon app, and the race is broadcast live and free nationwide on SBS and SBS On Demand from 6:00am AEST.
