Ultra Marathons
An ultra marathon is any race longer than the marathon's 26.2 miles, and that definition covers an enormous range. A 50K on a flat canal towpath and a 268-mile winter crossing of the Pennine Way are both ultras. They have almost nothing else in common.
So the useful question is never "which ultra" but "which kind of ultra". The four things that actually decide how hard a race will be are distance, elevation, whether the route is marked or self-navigated, and the cut-off. Every race below is listed with those facts where the organiser publishes them, because a 34-mile coastal race with 6,558ft of climbing is a far harder day than a 50-miler with 5,000ft — and the distance alone tells you the opposite.
Verus lists 415 ultra marathons across 4 countries, 380 of them still to come. Race guides are researched by hand from the organiser's own material; directory listings link straight out to the organiser. Either way, every page says plainly where a fact hasn't been published rather than inventing one.

Ultra Marathons is one word for very different races
Multi-day and 100+ miles
52 racesRaces beyond 100 miles, whether run continuously or as a staged event with an overnight camp. At this distance sleep strategy, foot care and crew logistics stop being details and become the race. Most have qualification standards, and most have finish rates well under half the starting field.

100 miles
5 racesThe classic hundred. A flat, marked, fully supported hundred with a generous cut-off is a genuinely achievable step up from 50 miles; a mountain hundred with self-navigation and checkpoint cut-offs is a different sport. Read the elevation figure and the cut-off together — they tell you which one you're looking at.
100K
66 races62 miles, and the most common first ultra beyond 50K in Britain — largely because the big mass-participation events sit here, with marked routes, pit stops every few miles and bag transfer. Long enough to need a night-running plan for most of the field.

50 miles
67 racesThe distance where ultra training genuinely starts to differ from marathon training: back-to-back long runs, eating on the move, and walking the climbs on purpose. Usually a single long day rather than an overnight, which makes it the natural first big ultra.

50K to 45 miles
214 racesThe entry point. A 50K is only five miles past a marathon, and on flat ground plenty of people run their first one off marathon training. On a coast path with 6,000ft of climb it is a much longer day than the number suggests — which is exactly why the elevation figures below matter more than the distances.

By difficulty
The toughest and the flattest
Ranked by climb per mile rather than total ascent, which is the comparison that survives across distances. Computed from 78 ultra marathons where the organiser publishes an official elevation figure — races without one are left out rather than estimated.
Every race
All 415 ultra marathons, by country
Listed chronologically within each country. Every race has its own page covering entry, route, elevation, cut-offs where published, a pace calculator, and the Verus athletes running it.
A dense, year-round calendar — city marathons, village 10Ks, parkruns every Saturday, and a triathlon scene that runs from pool sprints to full distance.

A running scene still being built in real time — Vision 2030 money, a five-year-old flagship marathon, and now T100's first-ever Saudi race, in Jeddah.
Verus covers 18 countries so far, and there are 14 with racing on the site but no ultra marathon in it yet — Jamaica, Canada, Singapore, Qatar, Spain, UAE, France, United States, Uzbekistan, Japan, Italy, Germany, China, New Zealand. Nothing is listed for them at this distance rather than padding the page out with events we haven't researched. Know one we're missing?

The guide
Choosing and training for ultra marathons
How to pick your first ultra
Start with the cut-off, not the distance. A generous cut-off is the single clearest signal that an organiser expects and welcomes back-of-the-field runners — and it is what buys you the right to walk the hills, sit down at an aid station, and still finish. Race to the Stones gives 25 to 30 hours for 100km. Wendover Woods gives 15 hours for 50 miles, two more than any other Centurion 50, because the course needs it.
Then look at whether the route is marked. A fully signed route with arrows and marshals removes an entire category of failure. Self-navigated races — the Fellsman, the Lakeland 100, the Cheviot Goat — expect you to carry a map and compass and use them in the dark, and a navigational error at mile 60 costs hours you do not have.
Then check aid station spacing. Seven stations across 50 miles means seven miles between them and a small pack; five stations means ten miles, and a genuinely different kit list. Finally, look at elevation per mile: anything over 150ft per mile is a hard day regardless of distance.
Qualification standards, and why they exist
Most serious British ultras require a qualifying race. Centurion ask for a marathon completed within its own cut-off for their 50-mile events, and a 50-miler under 15 hours for the Autumn 100. The West Highland Way Race asks for 90 miles across no more than two off-road ultras in the preceding three years. The Montane Spine requires entrants to be 21 or over with an ultra over 60 miles behind them.
These are not gatekeeping for its own sake. They exist because a runner who has never been out for twelve hours does not yet know what their stomach does at hour ten, and a mountain race cannot safely absorb a large number of people finding out at 2am in February. Treat the qualification standard as the organiser telling you what the race actually requires.
The corollary is worth planning around: entering an ultra often starts a year earlier than race day. Ballots for the Lakeland 50 and 100 open in September for the following July. Centurion entries open eleven months ahead and sell out in minutes.
Mandatory kit
Almost every ultra beyond 50K carries a mandatory kit list, and at the serious end it is checked. The Centurion list is representative: a charged mobile phone, one litre of water capacity, a survival blanket, a waterproof jacket rated to 10,000mm with sealed seams, a whistle, a headtorch of at least 100 lumens plus a backup, a warm hat, gloves, a dry long-sleeved layer, and your own cup — most ultras are cupless at aid stations now.
Mountain and winter races go further: map and compass, full waterproof trousers, and layers rated for standing still in bad weather rather than moving through it. The kit list is not a formality. It is written on the assumption that at some point you will be stationary, wet and cold, waiting for help, and it is sized for that.
Eating, and why most people stop
At marathon distance the legs fail first. Past about eight hours, the stomach usually does. The two most common reasons people withdraw from an ultra are missing a cut-off and being unable to eat, and the second frequently causes the first.
The fix is unglamorous: practise race nutrition on every long training run, particularly the back-to-back weekends, and find out now what you can still swallow when you feel sick. Cold weather and night running both suppress appetite sharply. Hot food and hot drinks at manned checkpoints are worth more than the minutes they cost, and races with a reputation for good checkpoint food — the Lakeland 50 among them — have that reputation for a reason.
Training: what actually changes
The single biggest difference from marathon training is back-to-back long runs — a long run on Saturday followed by a second, slower one on Sunday. They build time on feet and teach you to run on tired legs without the multi-week recovery cost of one enormous training day.
The second is walking. Walking the climbs is not a failure at ultra distance, it is the plan, and power-hiking steep ground efficiently is a trainable skill worth practising rather than improvising on the day.
The third is the taper. Volume comes down harder and further out than for a marathon: three to four weeks, because a 30-mile training day costs weeks of recovery rather than days. Every race page on Verus works its training window and taper guidance from the race's own distance and elevation rather than reusing a marathon-shaped block.
Questions
Ultra Marathons: common questions
What counts as an ultra marathon?
Any race longer than the marathon distance of 26.2 miles (42.2km). In practice the shortest common ultra distance is 50K — 31.1 miles — and they run from there up to multi-day events of several hundred miles.
What is a good first ultra marathon distance?
50K on relatively flat, well-marked ground. It is only five miles past a marathon, so marathon training gets most people there, and it introduces eating on the move and walking the hills without committing to a full day out. If you want a bigger first target, a marked and supported 100km with a generous cut-off — the mass-participation events — is the other common route in.
How long do you get to finish an ultra marathon?
It varies enormously and it is the most important number on the entry page. Typical figures are 13 hours for a marked 50-miler, 15 hours for a hilly one, 28 hours for a flat hundred, 36 to 40 hours for a mountain hundred, and days for multi-stage events. Most races also have intermediate cut-offs at aid stations, and at some — the Lakeland 100 among them — you must have left a checkpoint by its cut-off, not merely arrived.
Do you need a qualifying race to enter an ultra marathon?
For many of the larger British ultras, yes. Centurion require a marathon within its cut-off for their 50-mile races and a sub-15-hour 50-miler for the Autumn 100. The West Highland Way Race requires 90 miles across at most two off-road ultras in three years. Mass-participation events like Race to the Stones have no qualification requirement at all.
How much elevation is a lot for an ultra?
Divide the ascent by the distance. Under about 100ft per mile is a gentle course; 100-150ft per mile is a proper hilly race; over 200ft per mile is mountain or coast-path terrain and will slow you down dramatically. Endurancelife's North Cornwall ultra packs 6,558ft into 31.4 miles — over 200ft per mile — which makes it far harder than many 50-milers.
What kit do you need for an ultra marathon?
Most races publish a mandatory list. A representative one is a mobile phone, one litre of water capacity, a survival blanket, a waterproof jacket rated 10,000mm+ with sealed seams, a whistle, a headtorch of 100+ lumens plus a backup, a warm hat, gloves, a dry long-sleeved layer, and your own cup. Mountain and winter races add map, compass and waterproof trousers.
Do people walk in ultra marathons?
Yes, universally, and it is the plan rather than a concession. Almost everyone walks the steep climbs, including the winners. Some events — the mass-participation Ultra Challenge series in particular — are explicitly designed to be walked from start to finish and have large fields doing exactly that.
Are ultra marathons marked, or do you have to navigate?
Both exist, and the difference is fundamental. Mass-participation and mid-size trail ultras are usually fully signed, with arrows and marshals. Mountain and challenge events — the Fellsman, the Lakeland 100, the Cheviot Goat, the Spine — are self-navigated across open ground, often at night, and expect map and compass competence.
When should you enter an ultra marathon?
Earlier than you would expect. Ballots for the Lakeland 50 and 100 open the September before the July race. Centurion entries open roughly eleven months ahead and can sell out in minutes. Mass-participation events stay open longer but price in tiers, so entering early is cheaper.
How long does it take to recover from an ultra marathon?
Weeks rather than days, and it scales with elevation as much as distance. Plan for at least a fortnight of very easy running after a 50-miler and considerably longer after a hundred or a mountain race — which is also why ultra tapers start further out than marathon tapers.
Other distances
