Where Montane Lakeland 50 starts and finishes

Montane Lakeland 50 starts at Dalemain Estate, near Penrith, at the northern end of Ullswater and finishes at John Ruskin School, Coniston, Cumbria. We haven't been able to place those on a map accurately enough to show one — a pin in the wrong place is worse than no pin.

These are the start and finish points, not the route. Verus doesn't hold course files for this race, and drawing a line between two pins would be a guess you might end up training on. The official course map is the one to use: view it on the organiser's site .

Full Montane Lakeland 50 Route Breakdown

The second half of the Lakeland 100 course, run as a race in its own right. It starts from the Dalemain Estate at the northern end of Ullswater — a lap of the estate parkland first, which is where the field spreads out — then joins the 100 route and heads south through Howtown and over Fusedale to Haweswater, then via Kentmere, Ambleside and Elterwater to finish at the John Ruskin School in Coniston. Because the 100 field is already on the course by Saturday morning, the two races share the ground, which is a large part of what gives the Lakeland 50 its atmosphere.

0/8
  • Full mandatory kit as published for 2027 — the same mountain standard as the 100
  • Map and compass, and the ability to navigate: this is open fell, not a marked trail
  • A headtorch with spare batteries — a 10:00 start on a 50-mile mountain course means the back half of the field finishes at night
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers to mountain standard
  • Deep-lug fell shoes
  • Warm layers, hat and gloves
  • A checkpoint schedule showing the time you must LEAVE each one
  • Transport arranged between Coniston and Dalemain — the race is point-to-point across the Lake District

Training Strategy for Montane Lakeland 50

Standard Training Window

20-24 weeks is the realistic window for a first 50-mile ultra, assuming you already have a marathon's worth of base behind you. The block that matters is back-to-back long weekends — a long run on Saturday followed by a second, slower one on Sunday — which builds time on feet and teaches you to run on tired legs without the recovery cost of one enormous day. Practise your race-day nutrition on every one of them; at this distance the stomach fails before the legs do.

Terrain Specificity

This is a largely flat course, so most of your long runs can mirror that — flat and steady, building time on feet rather than hill strength.

The Taper Phase

Drop volume hard across the final three to four weeks — further out and steeper than a marathon taper, because a 30-mile training day costs weeks of recovery, not days. Keep some easy running and a little terrain-specific work in, but the goal is to reach Dalemain Estate, near Penrith, at the northern end of Ullswater with fresh feet and a rested gut rather than one more long run in the bank.

Pacing Execution

Lock in your target pace using the interactive splits calculator below — no official pacers are confirmed for this event, so a pace band on your watch is the more reliable option.

Fuel & Hydration Prep

Test your race-day fuel and hydration plan on your long training runs, not for the first time on race day — check the Race Day Checklist below for what's actually on this course.

50-Mile Ultra Nutrition & Fueling Plan

2-3 Days Prior

Eat normally with a modest carbohydrate increase. A 10:00 start means an ordinary night's sleep beforehand, which is a genuine advantage over the 100.

Race Morning

A full breakfast two to three hours before the 10:00 start, factoring in the coach transfer to Dalemain — eat before you get on it, not after you arrive.

On-Course Fueling

Eat at every checkpoint. 3,100m of ascent burns considerably more than a flat 50, and the manned checkpoints on this course are famous for their food — use them properly rather than passing through to save minutes you will lose later.

Post-Race Recovery

Eat at the finish in Coniston, and again before sleeping. The climbing cost of this race outlasts the mileage.

Where to Stay for Montane Lakeland 50

Coniston

Pros

At the finish and at race HQ, which is where you want a bed after 50 mountain miles. Also where the transport to the start leaves from.

Cons

Small village, peak season, books out very early for this weekend.

Ambleside

Pros

The most rooms near the course and on the route late in the race — good for crew and easy to reach Coniston from.

Cons

Busy and expensive in late July, and 8 miles from the finish on slow roads.

Penrith / Ullswater

Pros

Nearest to the Dalemain start, with the M6 on the doorstep for getting there.

Cons

The wrong end of the course for the finish — you will need to get back across the Lakes afterwards.

Travel & Logistics

By Train

Penrith is the nearest station to the Dalemain start, on the West Coast Main Line. Windermere is nearest to the Coniston finish. Because it is point-to-point, most runners leave a car at Coniston and use the organiser's transport to the start — check the current race information for what is offered.

Park & Ride Shuttles

No public Park & Ride, but the organiser has historically run coach transfers from Coniston to Dalemain on race morning. Confirm arrangements for 2027.

Road closures

None — the route is on bridleways and footpaths.

Spectator & Cheer Guide

Cheer Zones & Hotspots

Dalemain for the start, where the parkland lap gives a rare chance to see the whole field running together. Ambleside is the best mid-race spot, and Coniston is where the finish happens, often late into the night.

Course Navigation

The central fells are crossed by few roads and July traffic is slow. Dalemain, Ambleside and Coniston is a realistic three-stop plan; trying to reach Haweswater or Kentmere as well is not.

Live App Tracking

Runners are tracked through the checkpoints, with live tracking published by the organiser over the weekend.
