Full Ultra-Trail Australia UTA100 Route Breakdown

One hundred and one kilometres around the Jamison and Megalong valleys, and the reason a generation of Australian trail runners learned what a 100km actually costs. From Scenic World at Katoomba the course drops into the Jamison Valley down the Furber Steps, follows the Federal Pass to the Golden Stairs and climbs onto Narrow Neck — a long, exposed plateau above two valleys. It runs south along Narrow Neck to Tarros Ladder, Medlow Gap, Dunphys Camp and Ironpot Ridge, a ridge-top section carrying Aboriginal grinding grooves and pots, then drops onto Megalong Valley Road and turns north onto the Six Foot Track for the long climb out of the Megalong. The last thing between a runner and the finish, at about 99km, is the most famous staircase in trail running: 951 Furber Steps back up to Scenic World.

Tap items to mark off your race-day readiness.

0/7
  • Every item on the published mandatory gear list, packed and checked — kit checks are enforced and non-compliance ends your race
  • A head torch with spare batteries; a 28-hour cut-off means most of the field runs into the dark
  • Warm and waterproof layers — the Blue Mountains in May can turn genuinely cold, and Narrow Neck is exposed
  • A nutrition plan rehearsed on long training runs, and enough of it to bridge the gaps between checkpoints
  • Poles, if you use them, and the practice to use them on 951 steps
  • Your crew briefed on which checkpoints they can actually reach, and when
  • Accommodation booked in Katoomba well in advance — the town fills for race weekend

Training Strategy for Ultra-Trail Australia UTA100

Standard Training Window

20-24 weeks is the realistic window for a first 62.8-mile ultra, assuming you already have a marathon's worth of base behind you. The block that matters is back-to-back long weekends — a long run on Saturday followed by a second, slower one on Sunday — which builds time on feet and teaches you to run on tired legs without the recovery cost of one enormous day. Practise your race-day nutrition on every one of them; at this distance the stomach fails before the legs do.

Terrain Specificity

This is a largely flat course, so most of your long runs can mirror that — flat and steady, building time on feet rather than hill strength.

The Taper Phase

Drop volume hard across the final three to four weeks — further out and steeper than a marathon taper, because a 30-mile training day costs weeks of recovery, not days. Keep some easy running and a little terrain-specific work in, but the goal is to reach Scenic World, Katoomba with fresh feet and a rested gut rather than one more long run in the bank.

Pacing Execution

Lock in your target pace using the interactive splits calculator below — no official pacers are confirmed for this event, so a pace band on your watch is the more reliable option.

Fuel & Hydration Prep

Test your race-day fuel and hydration plan on your long training runs, not for the first time on race day — check the Race Day Checklist below for what's actually on this course.

62.8-Mile Ultra Nutrition & Fueling Plan

2-3 Days Prior

A deliberate increase in carbohydrate over the two to three days before the race is the reliable approach at this distance.

Race Morning

Eat a carbohydrate-focused breakfast two to three hours before the start, and stick to something you've already tested in training rather than trying anything new.

On-Course Fueling

At 100km over this much vertical, fuelling is the race. Most runners take on carbohydrate every 30 to 45 minutes throughout and use the checkpoints for real food as well as gels — and the event publishes its own nutrition guide, which is worth reading before you build a plan around what you assume will be there.

Post-Race Recovery

Post-race recovery starts with carbohydrate and protein, ideally within the first hour.

Where to Stay for Ultra-Trail Australia UTA100

Katoomba

Pros

Walk to the start, the expo and the finish. Everything about the weekend is simpler, and the town is built for visitors.

Cons

Books out months ahead for race weekend, at race-weekend prices.

Leura and Wentworth Falls

Pros

Quieter, a few minutes down the highway, and both sit near the course. Good food.

Cons

You need a car or a train, and the trains are infrequent at the hours this race keeps.

Blackheath

Pros

Cheaper, less crowded, still on the train line.

Cons

Twenty minutes from Katoomba, which matters at 4am and again at midnight.

Travel & Logistics

By Train

Katoomba is on the Blue Mountains line from Sydney Central, roughly two hours, and the station is a walk from the town centre and Scenic World. It is one of the few 100km races anywhere that is genuinely reachable by public transport.

Park & Ride Shuttles

The event publishes its own transport and parking arrangements for Scenic World and the checkpoints — parking at the start is limited and managed.

Road closures

Road and track closures across the Blue Mountains national park and Megalong Valley are published on the event’s own road and track closures page.

Spectator & Cheer Guide

Cheer Zones & Hotspots

Scenic World for the start and finish, and the top of the Furber Steps for the last hundred metres of a very long day. Several checkpoints are accessible to crew; the event publishes which.

Course Navigation

Most of the course is inside a national park and unreachable by car. Spectating UTA realistically means the start, the finish, and one or two crew points — which is part of why the finish is as loud as it is.

Live App Tracking

Live tracking and finish-line streams run through UTMB World Series coverage across race weekend.
