Coast to Kosci Race Day Weather

A real forecast appears here once one exists for race day — usually about a week to ten days out. Nothing is shown until then, because a made-up forecast is worse than none.

Coast to Kosci Route Map & Elevation Profile

Starting at Twofold Bay, near Eden, southern New South Wales and finishing at Charlotte Pass, after summiting Mount Kosciuszko. Total elevation gain is not published for this event, and Verus does not estimate one.

Is Coast to Kosci flat?

It starts at sea level and finishes above 1,800m having crossed the highest ground on the continent, so no. The organiser publishes the route and the summit rather than a total ascent figure, and Verus does not invent one. What defines the race is not the gradient anyway but the combination: a November start on the coast, in heat, followed by a long climb into alpine terrain and, for most of the field, two nights out.

Where Coast to Kosci starts and finishes

Coast to Kosci starts at Twofold Bay, near Eden, southern New South Wales and finishes at Charlotte Pass, after summiting Mount Kosciuszko. We haven't been able to place those on a map accurately enough to show one — a pin in the wrong place is worse than no pin.

These are the start and finish points, not the route. Verus doesn't hold course files for this race, and drawing a line between two pins would be a guess you might end up training on. The official course map is the one to use: view it on the organiser's site .

Full Coast to Kosci Route Breakdown

Two hundred and forty kilometres from the ocean to the roof of the continent. The race starts at Twofold Bay near Eden on the far south coast of New South Wales and finishes at Charlotte Pass, having summited Mount Kosciuszko, the highest point in Australia, on the way. It has run since 2004, is organised by runners rather than by a company, and states its own values — community, humility, resilience — on the front page, which for a 240km race is not decoration.

Coast to Kosci Race Day Checklist

Tap items to mark off your race-day readiness.

0/6
  • A qualifying result that meets the published criteria — and an application in before the June-announced deadline
  • A crew, briefed properly: at 240km over 46 hours the crew is part of the race, not an accessory
  • Kit for a coastal November start in heat and an alpine summit in the small hours of the second night
  • A sleep plan, because most of the field is out for two nights
  • A nutrition plan rehearsed over multi-day distance rather than adapted from a hundred-miler
  • The current race rules read, since they were rewritten in 2022

Training Strategy for Coast to Kosci

Standard Training Window

20-24 weeks is the realistic window for a first 149.1-mile ultra, assuming you already have a marathon's worth of base behind you. The block that matters is back-to-back long weekends — a long run on Saturday followed by a second, slower one on Sunday — which builds time on feet and teaches you to run on tired legs without the recovery cost of one enormous day. Practise your race-day nutrition on every one of them; at this distance the stomach fails before the legs do.

Terrain Specificity

This is a largely flat course, so most of your long runs can mirror that — flat and steady, building time on feet rather than hill strength.

The Taper Phase

Drop volume hard across the final three to four weeks — further out and steeper than a marathon taper, because a 30-mile training day costs weeks of recovery, not days. Keep some easy running and a little terrain-specific work in, but the goal is to reach Twofold Bay, near Eden, southern New South Wales with fresh feet and a rested gut rather than one more long run in the bank.

Pacing Execution

Lock in your target pace using the interactive splits calculator below — no official pacers are confirmed for this event, so a pace band on your watch is the more reliable option.

Fuel & Hydration Prep

Test your race-day fuel and hydration plan on your long training runs, not for the first time on race day — check the Race Day Checklist below for what's actually on this course.

149.1-Mile Ultra Nutrition & Fueling Plan

2-3 Days Prior

A deliberate increase in carbohydrate over the two to three days before the race is the conventional approach at this distance.

Race Morning

Eat a carbohydrate-focused breakfast two to three hours before the start, and stick to something you've already tested in training rather than trying anything new.

On-Course Fueling

At 240km over up to 46 hours this is entirely a crew problem, and the crew is the aid station. Everything should be rehearsed in training — including what you can still eat after thirty hours, which is usually not what you planned to.

Post-Race Recovery

A mix of carbohydrate and protein in the hour or so after finishing supports recovery, though at this distance recovery is measured in weeks.

Where to Stay for Coast to Kosci

Eden

Pros

At the start, on the coast, and the obvious base for the night before.

Cons

Small town, and a long way from the finish.

Jindabyne

Pros

The base for the finish and for anyone recovering afterwards, with the Kosciuszko Road up to Charlotte Pass.

By Train

No rail to either end. Eden is about seven hours from Sydney by road and three from Canberra; Charlotte Pass is reached through Jindabyne and the Kosciuszko Road.

Live App Tracking

The race publishes a confirmed runner list and results on its own site.
