Leg 1 of 3

Swim — 1.9km

A one-lap rectangular course in the sheltered, man-made lake built for the 2000 Olympics. It starts in front of the grandstand from a pontoon, passes the grandstand again on the way back, and exits under the bridge straight into transition. If open water makes you nervous, this is about as controlled as a 1.9km gets.

Wetsuit: The organiser publishes an average water temperature of 19°C, which in early May is usually comfortably wetsuit-legal. Confirmed on the day against the measured temperature.

Leg 2 of 3

Bike — 90km

Two laps through open country under the Blue Mountains. Out of transition along the regatta and left around the Penrith Whitewater Stadium, then out of the precinct via McCarthys Lane and left onto Castlereagh Road, past the 15km mark and Godolphin Stables to a U-turn. Left into Brooks Lane, past 30km on Wilshire Road, left onto Jockbett Road and onto The Driftway for two more U-turns, then back the same way to Castlereagh Road and the precinct. The second lap starts at Castlereagh Road and McCarthys Lane.

Leg 3 of 3

Run — 21.1km

Laps at the foot of the Blue Mountains. From transition the course crosses the bridge, turns right at Car Park Gate A and heads north along Old Castlereagh Road with the mountains to the west, to a northern turnaround, back past the first aid station and down to the southern bank of the SIRC lake for a U-turn and another lap. On the third approach to the southern U-turn, runners continue straight instead, for a final lap around the competition lake itself.

Wetsuit outlook

Will you need a wetsuit at IRONMAN 70.3 Western Sydney?

Water temperature at inland lake in May has typically been 17.7°C, ranging from 16.9°C to 19°C in eight of every ten years. Against IRONMAN / 70.3's thresholds for this race's 1900m swim, that means:

Wetsuit optional — and recommended

Up to and including 24.5°C (76.1°F) every athlete may wear a wetsuit and remain eligible for awards.

What the organiser says

The organiser publishes an average water temperature of 19°C, which in early May is usually comfortably wetsuit-legal. Confirmed on the day against the measured temperature.

Estimated from air-temperature history — no direct measurement of this water exists, and small, shallow venues tend to run a degree or two warmer than shown. The official temperature is taken an hour before the start, and only that reading decides the rule on the day.

Transitions

Everything is inside the Regatta Centre. The swim exits under the bridge straight into transition; the bike returns through the same point it exited; the run exit is at the bottom corner with a drink station on the way out.

Race Day Info & Checklist

On the day

  • The whole race is at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, about fifty minutes from the Sydney CBD by road — swim, both transitions, run and finish in one venue.
  • The swim is in the purpose-built Olympic rowing lake, which makes it one of the most controlled and least intimidating 70.3 swims anywhere.
  • A pontoon start for all age-group and team athletes.
  • The final run lap goes around the competition lake itself rather than repeating the road section.
  • Flex90 eligible, which gives more flexibility on changing your entry than a standard registration.
  • On-course fuel, per the official 2024 Athlete Information Guide, is PURE Sports Nutrition Electrolyte and Maurten Energy Gels/Bars — bike aid stations are roughly every 20km, run aid roughly every 2km.
  • Unlike most IRONMAN races, there are no transition bags here — all bike and run gear is laid out directly at your bike on race morning, and bags or tubs left in transition are removed.
  • This race hosts the NSW Long Course State Championships and doubles as a 2025 World Triathlon Multisport World Championship (Pontevedra, Spain) qualifying event. A free 5-minute post-race massage is available, plus free minor bike mechanics on the Saturday before.
  • Enter and exit via Gate C off Old Castlereagh Road only.

Checklist

  • A wetsuit — around 19°C in early May is comfortably legal in most years
  • A bike plan for a fast course with technical turns rather than hills
  • Warm layers for the wait; Penrith in early May is genuinely cold at dawn, colder than coastal Sydney
  • Gear packed to the published transition process
  • A run plan that knows the third southern U-turn is where the pattern changes

Transport, Spectating & Where to Stay

Transport

Penrith station is on the Sydney Trains network, about an hour from Central, and roughly 10km from the Regatta Centre — a taxi or lift at that end. Most athletes drive; it is about fifty minutes from the CBD.

Parking is inside the Regatta Centre precinct, which the organiser describes as the point of the venue.

Closures along Castlereagh Road, Old Castlereagh Road, Brooks Lane, Wilshire Road, Jockbett Road and The Driftway.

Spectator guide

The grandstand for the swim start and finish, transition, and the lakeside run — all within the same precinct.

You do not need to move at all. The Regatta Centre was built to be watched from, and the organiser leans on that.

Where to stay

Penrith

+ Closest accommodation to the Regatta Centre, on the train line from Sydney, and priced well below the city.

Still about 10km from the venue, so you need a car or a lift on race morning.

Sydney CBD

+ Everything, and a fifty-minute drive out on race morning if you are already visiting.

That fifty-minute drive starts before dawn.

The lower Blue Mountains

+ Glenbrook and Springwood are close, quiet, and a pleasant base if you are staying a few days.

Winding road down to Penrith in the dark.
