About This Tool
Unlike a single-pace running calculator, a triathlon finish time is built from five separate legs — swim, T1, bike, T2, run — each with wildly different paces. This tool lets you pick a standard distance category (Sprint through Full Distance, or T100) and enter your own honest pace for each leg, including transition times, to get a real projected finish time rather than a generic estimate.

A triathlon is five events, not three
Swim, bike and run get the attention. T1 and T2 are where a surprising amount of time goes, and where a first-timer can lose more than they will gain from a season of swim sessions.
Building the whole race from its parts before the day is worth doing for two reasons: it produces a realistic finish time rather than an optimistic one, and it shows you which leg your time is actually in — which is usually not the leg people worry about.
Where the time actually is
The proportions surprise people new to the sport. Across standard distances, the bike is the largest single block of time by a wide margin, and the swim is the smallest — often under a fifth of the race despite absorbing most of the anxiety.
- The swim is the shortest leg and the one people over-train relative to its share of the finish time. It matters for how you arrive on the bike, not for the clock.
- The bike is where the race is won or lost on time, and where pacing errors are least forgiving — overcooking the bike shows up on the run, not on the bike.
- The run is where the race is decided on placing, because it is where bike pacing mistakes become visible.
- Transitions are free time. Two minutes saved across T1 and T2 costs nothing in fitness and is available to everybody.
Transitions, honestly
A first-timer taking five minutes in T1 is completely normal and entirely fixable. Most of it is not running through transition — it is standing still, deciding things that could have been decided beforehand.
- 1 Lay your kit out in the order you will use it, and rehearse the sequence before race morning rather than inventing it at the time.
- 2 Elastic laces remove the single slowest action in T2.
- 3 Know where your bike is. Count racks from a fixed landmark, because everything looks identical from the swim exit.
- 4 Get the wetsuit to your waist while running from the water, not standing at your rack.
- 5 Helmet on and fastened before you touch the bike — it is a rule as well as a habit, and it is a disqualification if you get it wrong.
Pacing the whole thing
The most common triathlon mistake is treating the three legs as three races. They are one race with three phases, and the effort you spend early is not available later.
Practically: swim within yourself so that you arrive on the bike able to ride rather than recover; ride at an effort you could sustain if you had to keep going another hour; and set the run target from a heat-adjusted pace rather than your standalone 10K time, because you will not be running it on fresh legs and it usually starts hours after dawn.
