Leg 1 of 3
Swim — 1.9km
A 1.9km out-and-back swim in the Regatta Lake — a purpose-built rowing course, so it is straight, sheltered, uniformly deep and about as controlled as open water gets in Britain. A significant part of why this race suits a first middle distance.
- Venue
- Regatta Lake, National Water Sports Centre
- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above
- Surface
- Lake — purpose-built regatta course, still water.
Wetsuit: Compulsory for the Half distance regardless of water temperature, per the official race guide — unlike the same-weekend Sprint, which follows standard BTF temperature-dependent rules.
Leg 2 of 3
Bike — 90km
A 90km ride out of the water sports centre into the Nottinghamshire countryside. The organiser describes it as relatively flat, and it is — gently rolling rather than hilly, which makes it one of the faster middle-distance bike legs in the UK calendar.
- Venue
- Rolling Nottinghamshire countryside
- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above
- Surface
- Road — open roads, gently rolling.
Non-drafting
Leg 3 of 3
Run — 21.1km
A flat, fast half marathon inside and around the Holme Pierrepont site, taking in the River Trent, the white water course and the Regatta Lake. Lapped, traffic-free and easy for supporters to watch.
- Venue
- The River Trent, White Water Rapids and Regatta Lake
- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above
- Surface
- Path and road — flat, traffic-free.
Transitions
A single transition at the National Water Sports Centre serves both T1 and T2 — swim, bike and run all radiate from the same site.

Where Outlaw Half Nottingham starts and finishes
Outlaw Half Nottingham starts at National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham and finishes at Regatta Lake, National Water Sports Centre. We haven't been able to place those on a map accurately enough to show one — a pin in the wrong place is worse than no pin.
These are the start and finish points, not the route. Verus doesn't hold course files for this race, and drawing a line between two pins would be a guess you might end up training on. The official course map is the one to use: view it on the organiser's site .

Race Day Info & Checklist
On the day
- Everything happens on one site: the swim, both transitions, the run and the finish are all at the National Water Sports Centre.
- The Regatta Lake is a purpose-built rowing course — straight, sheltered and consistent, which removes most of the variables of an open-water swim.
- The bike leg is relatively flat by middle-distance standards, and the run is flat and traffic-free.
- Relay teams of two or three, and an aquabike category, both run alongside the individual race.
- Timing chip worn on the left ankle. Race pack: two race numbers, bike security and helmet stickers, a security wristband, a swim cap and timing strap.
- One HIGH5-branded bike feed station at mile 35 (gels, bananas, bottles, water); the run has 10 feed stations roughly every 1.4 miles with HIGH5 energy drink, HIGH5 Zero, cola, water, gels and food.
- Drafting requires a 12-metre gap from the rider ahead unless actively overtaking, with a time penalty or disqualification for violations. A mandatory 20mph zone applies at Radcliffe Roundabout (mile 52.7).
- Transition has no changing tents and nudity is banned; bikes are racked overnight Saturday with no food or gels left on them (a wildlife hazard). Sunday racers must register and rack their bike on the Saturday.
Checklist
- Wetsuit, goggles and the swim cap from your race pack for the Regatta Lake
- Bike, helmet and shoes racked at the single transition per the race-morning schedule
- Run shoes and race nutrition in transition — you pass through it between every discipline
- Your timing chip, fitted per the athlete guide
- A pacing plan that respects how flat and fast this course is: it is easy to overcook the bike here
- Registration and bike racking completed on the Saturday if you're racing the Sunday Half
- A meeting point agreed with family and friends — the single-site layout makes this the easiest middle distance in Britain to spectate
