Leg 1 of 3
Swim — 1.5km
A 1,500m swim in Llyn Padarn, a clear, sheltered glacial lake directly beneath the Eryri peaks. One of the more scenic swim starts in British triathlon, and one of the colder ones.
- Venue
- Llyn Padarn, Llanberis
- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above
- Surface
- Lake — open water, cold, sheltered.
Wetsuit: Mandatory below 15.9°C; banned above 22°C (24.6°C for age 60+), per the organiser's FAQ — must cover the torso, socks allowed, gloves/boots not.
Leg 2 of 3

- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above

Non-drafting
Leg 3 of 3
Run — 11.7km
An 11.7km trail run up through the abandoned Dinorwig slate quarries above Llanberis — now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Steps, inclines and slate spoil rather than trail path, and the reason the race is named as it is.

- The Dinorwig slate quarries above Llanberis
- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above
- Surface
- Trail — slate, quarry steps and steep incline.
Transitions

Where Slateman Triathlon starts and finishes
These are the start and finish points, not the route. Verus doesn't hold course files for this race, and drawing a line between two pins would be a guess you might end up training on. The official course map is the one to use: view it on the organiser's site .

Race Day Info & Checklist
On the day
- The run leg goes through the Dinorwig slate quarries, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site — steep, stepped and unlike any road-triathlon run leg.
- The bike leg climbs the Llanberis Pass, one of the most significant road climbs in Wales.
- Four triathlon distances plus a duathlon run over the weekend, from Sprint to full-distance Ultra.
- A Series Bundle links Slateman with Sandman on Anglesey in September.
- Race pack: a timing chip on a Velcro ankle strap (£55 charge if lost or not returned), race bib (worn on the back for the bike, front for the run), a bike seat-post flag, and a colour-coded swim hat.
- Small soft-sided bags are allowed in transition — as long as they don't obstruct other athletes — but full transition rules defer to British Triathlon Competition Rules.
- E-bikes and other power-assisted bikes are explicitly banned; all other bikes, including mountain bikes, are allowed.
Checklist
- A wetsuit for Llyn Padarn — a Snowdonian lake in June is cold
- Trail shoes for the quarry run: slate and quarry steps, not tarmac
- Climbing gears for the Llanberis Pass
- Full weather cover — Eryri makes its own weather, and the quarry run is exposed
- A T2 plan that accounts for changing shoes properly rather than losing a minute and then falling on slate
Transport, Spectating & Where to Stay
Transport
Bangor is the nearest mainline station, around 9 miles from Llanberis, with bus or taxi onward. The Llanberis Lake Railway and Snowdon Mountain Railway are tourist lines, not transport.
Not published for this event. Llanberis parking is limited on a race weekend — check the athlete information.
The bike leg uses open mountain roads — check the athlete information for any managed sections on the Llanberis Pass.
Spectator guide
Llanberis village covers the swim exit, transition and the finish. The quarry run above the village gives the best views of the race, and the Llanberis Pass is the obvious spot for the bike.
Llanberis is compact and walkable, and the quarry paths above it are steep but short. The Pass is a single road — park once and stay put.
Where to stay
Llanberis
+ At the venue, on the lake, walkable to transition and the finish, with pubs and cafes for afterwards.
– A small village in a busy national park — rooms go early for race weekend.
Caernarfon
+ More choice, a castle town worth a night in its own right, and a short drive to Llanberis.
– Not walkable to the race, so it means an early drive on race morning.
Betws-y-Coed / Capel Curig
+ On the far side of the Pass, good for anyone combining the race with a weekend in Eryri.
– The drive in crosses the bike course, which needs planning around on race morning.
