Also this weekend
A single course. THE ROC also runs in Wales (Snowdon, from Abersoch) and Scotland (Ben Nevis, from Kinlochleven), and completing all three in a season is THE ROC Trilogy — 300km with 20,615ft of total ascent across the three highest mountains in Great Britain.
Leg 1 of 3
Swim — 1.5km
A 1.5km teardrop course starting on the grass and running into Windermere, heading north along the shoreline to the next bay in front of Lakeside HQ, then rounding three buoys and returning parallel to the shore. A 200m run through transition follows.
- Venue
- Windermere, from the shore at YMCA Lakeside
- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above
- Surface
- Lake — open water, cold.
Wetsuit: Wetsuits are mandatory. If the water temperature falls below 11°C the swim is replaced by a 3km trail run, which tells you what kind of event this is.
Leg 2 of 3
Bike — 91km
Two legs of 45.5km each, ridden out to the foot of the mountain and back again. The organiser describes plenty of long fast sections with some technical ones thrown in on the way out, and long stretches of open picturesque road with plenty of hills and technical sections on the return.
- Venue
- The Lake District, out to Eskdale and back
- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above
- Surface
- Road — Lake District passes and valley roads, open to traffic.
Non-drafting
Leg 3 of 3
Run — 18.5km
8.75km up Scafell Pike and 8.75km back down — the highest mountain in England — over what the organiser calls a full mix of terrains, some steep, some fast, and a few technical sections. A closing 1km trail run through Lakeside forest brings you to the finish.
- Venue
- Scafell Pike, plus a closing trail run at Lakeside
- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above
- Surface
- Mountain — rock, scree and fell path, plus forest trail to finish.
Transitions
Four transitions rather than two, because the format is swim, bike, mountain, bike, run. All are managed from the YMCA Lakeside venue and the mountain foot.

Where THE ROC England starts and finishes
THE ROC England starts at YMCA Lakeside, Stoller Campus, Windermere, Cumbria and finishes at Windermere, from the shore at YMCA Lakeside. We haven't been able to place those on a map accurately enough to show one — a pin in the wrong place is worse than no pin.
These are the start and finish points, not the route. Verus doesn't hold course files for this race, and drawing a line between two pins would be a guess you might end up training on. The official course map is the one to use: view it on the organiser's site .

Transport, Spectating & Where to Stay
Transport
Windermere is the nearest station, on a branch from Oxenholme on the West Coast Main Line, with onward road transfer to Lakeside at the southern end of the lake.
Not published for this event. The YMCA Lakeside campus has its own parking — check the athlete information.
The bike legs run on open Lake District roads.
Spectator guide
YMCA Lakeside covers the swim, the first and last transitions and the finish. Supporters wanting to see the mountain leg need to reach the Scafell Pike path on foot from the valley.
Lake District roads are slow and the mountain is remote. Stay at Lakeside for the swim and the finish rather than chasing the middle of the race.
Where to stay
Newby Bridge / Lakeside
+ At the venue, at the southern end of Windermere — the shortest possible race-morning journey to a 07:30 start.
– Very limited accommodation immediately around the campus.
Bowness / Windermere
+ The widest choice on the lake, with the station and plenty of places to eat afterwards.
– A drive down the lake on race morning, on a road that is slow even early.
Ambleside
+ Central for the Lake District and well placed if you are combining the race with a weekend in the fells.
– Furthest from Lakeside of the three, at the wrong end of Windermere.
