Leg 1 of 3
Swim — 1km
A 1km swim starting from the old harbour at Kinlochleven, on a rectangular anti-clockwise course at the north-east end of Loch Leven marked with large yellow buoys, returning to the harbour.
- Venue
- Loch Leven, from the old harbour at Kinlochleven
- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above
- Surface
- Sea loch — open water, cold.
Wetsuit: Wetsuits are mandatory. If the water temperature falls below 11°C the swim is replaced by a 1.5km trail run.
Leg 2 of 3
Bike — 52km
Two legs of 26km each, out towards Fort William and back. The organiser describes sweeping fast sections and a stack of hills, with roughly 6km of rough, rugged trail that requires a mountain bike or a wide-tyre gravel bike — a road bike is not suitable for this course.
- Venue
- The West Highland Way, Kinlochleven to Fort William and back
- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above
- Surface
- Mixed — hilly Highland road with around 6km of rugged trail. Mountain or gravel bike required.
Non-drafting
Leg 3 of 3
Run — 18km
Ben Nevis by the mountain path: 8.25km of continuous climbing to a plateau near the summit of the highest mountain in Britain, then 8.25km back down the same route. A closing 1.5km trail run around a section of the River Leven brings you to the finish on Kinlochleven village green.
- Venue
- Ben Nevis, plus a closing trail run at Kinlochleven
- Elevation gain
- No official figure published — see notes above
- Surface
- Mountain — a good clear path, but relentless ascent, plus riverside trail to finish.
Transitions
Four transitions, matching the swim-bike-mountain-bike-run format. Transition opens at 06:30 with a safety briefing at 07:40 before the 08:00 start.

Where THE ROC Scotland starts and finishes
These are the start and finish points, not the route. Verus doesn't hold course files for this race, and drawing a line between two pins would be a guess you might end up training on. The official course map is the one to use: view it on the organiser's site .

- Full mandatory mountain kit for Ben Nevis, in October, when the summit can hold snow

Transport, Spectating & Where to Stay
Transport
Fort William is the nearest station, on the West Highland Line, around 20 miles from Kinlochleven by road with no direct rail link to the village.
Not published for this event — check the athlete information for parking in Kinlochleven.
The bike legs use open Highland roads and West Highland Way trail.
Spectator guide
Kinlochleven village green covers the swim, the transitions and the finish. The lower Ben Nevis path from Glen Nevis is where supporters can see the mountain leg.
Kinlochleven is compact. Glen Nevis is a 30-40 minute drive round the loch — feasible for one trip, not for leapfrogging.
Where to stay
Kinlochleven
+ At the venue, walkable to the start, transitions and finish. The obvious base for an 08:00 start.
– A small Highland village with very limited rooms.
Glencoe / Ballachulish
+ A short drive along the loch, more choice, and spectacular in its own right.
– Not walkable to the venue.
Fort William
+ The largest town nearby, on the West Highland Line, and at the foot of Ben Nevis itself.
– Around 20 miles from Kinlochleven, so an early drive on race morning.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is THE ROC Scotland 2026?
Saturday 3 October 2026, starting at 08:00 from Kinlochleven, with transition open from 06:30 and a safety briefing at 07:40.
How long is THE ROC Scotland?
Around 71km in total with 7,874ft of ascent — a 1km Loch Leven swim, 26km out and 26km back on the bike, 8.25km up and 8.25km down Ben Nevis, and a 1.5km trail run to finish.
What bike do you need for THE ROC Scotland?
A mountain bike or a wide-tyre gravel bike. Around 6km of the course is rough, rugged trail on the West Highland Way, and a road bike is not suitable.
Which mountain does THE ROC Scotland climb?
Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain — up the mountain path to a plateau near the summit and back down the same route.
What is the cut-off for THE ROC Scotland?
A checkpoint 5km up Ben Nevis closes at 12:30. Anyone who has not reached it by then is turned around before the summit.
Is THE ROC Scotland harder than THE ROC England?
It is shorter — around 71km against 111km — but it carries more climbing, at 7,874ft against 6,916ft, and it needs a mountain bike. An October date in the Highlands adds a weather risk the September English round does not have.
Do you need a wetsuit for THE ROC Scotland?
Yes, mandatory. Below 11°C the swim is replaced by a 1.5km trail run instead.
When were THE ROC Scotland results published?
Not yet — results can't exist before the race happens. They'll be added here (or on the official results page) once it's done.
What nutrition is on THE ROC Scotland course?
Kinetica gels and bananas on the bike (two stations), plus Kinetica protein bars and gels at T2/T3 — with emergency-only water at the mountain checkpoint and summit.
