Every mainstream training plan you can download was written for a temperate climate. It assumes you build base through a cool winter, sharpen in spring, race in early summer, and take a down period when it gets hot. It assumes that if a session goes badly you can look at the weather and know it will be better in six weeks.
None of that is available here. Jamaica has no cool season to build in, no cooling trend to sharpen into, and no month where the weather stops being the largest single variable in a workout. That is not a reason to train badly — it is a reason to train to a different structure, and this guide is about what that structure looks like.
There is no season, and that changes the plan
Here is the whole problem in one table. These are Kingston's conditions index figures at 06:00, from eleven years of hourly records, with London on the same basis. The index is air temperature plus dew point in Fahrenheit — the standard coaching heuristic.

London swings 39 points across the year. Kingston swings 11. A British runner's training year has a built-in structure handed to them by the weather; a Jamaican runner's does not, and has to be imposed deliberately.
Practically, that means three things. Your hardest training blocks are not scheduled around the calendar, they are scheduled around your races. Your session quality is governed by the clock rather than the month. And your progress has to be measured by something other than raw pace, because raw pace here is a weather reading as much as a fitness reading.
The clock is your periodisation
The single largest lever available to a runner in Jamaica is the hour they set off. Between 06:00 and 08:00 in Kingston the index climbs six to seven points, and by 10:00 it is nine to eleven points above dawn. In September the run you can do at 06:00 at an index of 150 becomes an index of 161 at 10:00 — a different training session with the same name written on it.

So the rule is simple and unglamorous: quality goes at first light, always. Not because dawn running is virtuous, but because a threshold session at an index of 150 is a genuine threshold session and the same session at 161 is a heat-tolerance workout wearing a threshold session's clothes. If you can only train once a day, that run goes at dawn and everything else negotiates around it.
What time is first light?
Sunrise in Kingston runs from roughly 05:30 in June to about 06:40 in late January, with no daylight saving. That means a 05:30 start in winter is a genuinely dark run and a 05:30 start in June is not — a detail that matters for lighting, visibility and how much company you will have out there.
Train to effort, and measure fitness somewhere else
The hardest habit to break is chasing pace. In these conditions your watch reports the weather at least as loudly as it reports your fitness, and a runner who forces goal pace through a September dew point is not training harder, they are training a different, worse session and accumulating fatigue they cannot use.
- 1 Set session targets by effort and by breathing, and treat the pace as an output you look at afterwards rather than a target you hit.
- 2 Use heart rate as a check rather than a target — it drifts upward in heat at a constant effort, which is information, not a fault.
- 3 Convert every pace prescription into a heat-adjusted range before the session rather than after it, so you are not making the decision while already three miles in and disappointed.
- 4 Take one honest fitness reading a month from a race, because a race is the one occasion where everybody in the field is dealing with the same conditions you are.
How each session type has to change

The Mandeville option
Jamaica has one genuinely cooler place to train, and it is not on the coast. Mandeville, the capital of Manchester, sits on an inland plateau at 628 metres — the only parish capital in Jamaica that is neither on the coast nor on a major river, and locally famous for exactly this reason.
Six hundred metres of elevation is worth roughly four degrees of air temperature under the standard atmospheric lapse rate, and cooler air at the same absolute humidity is doing you a real favour, because it lowers the temperature half of the index while the dew point stays put. It is not altitude training in the physiological sense — 628m is far too low for a meaningful haematological response — but it is the closest thing on the island to a cool-weather training block, and it is a couple of hours from Kingston.
What it is and is not
Treat the plateau as a heat-relief camp rather than an altitude camp. The benefit is that you can run quality sessions at a genuine quality effort, which is a large benefit. The benefit is not extra red cells, and any plan sold to you on that basis is selling the wrong thing.
Acclimatisation cuts both ways
If you live and train here you are already heat-acclimatised, and that is a genuine asset the moment you race anywhere cooler. Expanded plasma volume, earlier and more dilute sweating and a lower heart rate at a given effort do not switch off when you land somewhere temperate — a Jamaican-trained runner racing in cool conditions typically runs quicker than their local times suggest, not slower.
The mirror image is what catches Jamaican runners out abroad: the times look flattering, and the pacing habits built in permanent heat — conservative starts, effort-based running, generous fluid plans — are exactly right and easy to abandon when the weather feels easy. Keep them.
Fluid and salt as part of the plan, not an afterthought
Training here means chronic, repeated fluid and sodium loss rather than a single bad day. The failure mode is not dramatic collapse, it is a slow accumulation across a week — heavier legs, poorer sleep, a heart rate that will not come down, sessions that keep going slightly wrong for no obvious reason.
- Rehydrate deliberately after every session rather than waiting for thirst, and include sodium rather than plain water alone.
- On long runs, plan the fluid the way you would plan the route. Loops that pass a stash beat point-to-point routes for exactly this reason.
- Weigh yourself before and after a long run occasionally. It is the cheapest honest measurement of what you are actually losing.
- Do not solve heavy sweating with large volumes of plain water on long efforts — that carries its own serious risk.
